Manchester United have appointed Jose Mourinho as their manager, the English Premier League club said on Friday.

The 53-year-old Portuguese has signed an initial three-year contract.

He replaces Dutchman Louis van Gaal whose two-year reign at Old Trafford ended on Monday, two days after United lifted the FA Cup.

The self-styled "Special One", Mourinho was sacked in December by Chelsea, ending his second spell in charge of the London club.

He is the third manager at United since Alex Ferguson ended his trophy-filled 26-year reign at Old Trafford in 2013. David Moyes, Ferguson's hand-picked successor, lasted 10 months and Van Gaal had two years.

Mourinho has won the Champions League twice. He has also claimed the EPL title on three occasions with Chelsea, as well as domestic league titles in Portugal, Italy and Spain.
